Scripture Power

Even across the country my mom is doing a better job at teaching my children the gospel than I am. She's given my kids the Grandma Ginger Bible stories, Living Scripture videos, and these fabulous story books so my kids not only know their scripture stories but they LOVE them! One of my kids favorite activities is grabbing the Book of Mormon Stories book and sitting by themselves and looking through it. Emma tells all the stories as she goes. Weston is a somber little fellow and just looks so deep in thought while he quietly looks at the pictures. I wish I could read his thoughts to see if they're as deep as his expressions would suggest. Even Andrew likes flipping through and studying the pictures. My kids make sure I never miss a night reading to them and Emma reviews what we read the night before with amazing accuracy. Yesterday Weston climbed up on the couch with his Book of Mormon Stories and shot me a huge smile as he announced, "I'm going to read the gold plates." Thanks Mom!

Dr. Emma on Art Gifts

Emma's been into writing things and drawing pictures. She was at the table and was carefully coloring a lovely picture and told me, "This one's for Grandma, because she likes me!"

Dr. Emma on Growing Up

Mom- "Emma, what do you want to be when you grow up?"
Emma- "A mommy."
Mom- "How come?"
Emma- "'Cause I like mommies so I becided I'm gonna be one."

"Mom, whose mommy am I gonna be?"

Love this girl!!!

Emma's Christmas

I promise this is my last Christmas post. But I had told some people about this gift so I wanted to show the pictures:
When I was a little girl my mom and brothers (mostly Jesse) made me a barbie house for Christmas. I had a thing for barbies and this was the most glorious gift and got tons of use! It's my most memorable Christmas gift. Not just because I liked barbies but because it was thoughtful and my family had put time into making it for me. Emma started getting into make-believe and discovered barbies this year. So when I noticed an old changing table in our house was the right heighth for barbies I started getting ideas .

Here's the letter Emma wrote for Santa. For those of you who don't read Emma let me interpret: "Santa, I want a barbie house [heart] Emma" and then she draws a picture. She also wrote and drew one for Weston's blue lightning request.

Christmas morning Santa came to visit us at my mom's house in Vegas and Emma reminded him she wanted a barbie house (probably because she didn't see any house-shaped gifts under the tree).

A week later we arrived home and found Santa had pulled through after all!

I wanted to do more but was getting ready for our trip. Oh well, the details were really for me.

Cabin Fever

I'll spare you all the details of the drive home because it was pretty much like the drive there except we saw all the towns in the reverse order. But I thought I'd share this part because it made me laugh. As we were driving through some boring part of Texas we passed this car with teenagers and one was holding up a sign that read, "Smile if you're not wearing underwear." We laughed and they got a good laugh at their cleverness. When we passed the car again we were ready and everyone but Jamie smiled and laughed. Emma looked up and was perplexed why her father was wearing her panties on his head. But anyone who knows Jamie could imagine that weirdness is nothing new to this girl. You gotta do something to entertain yourself on long drives.

Playing at Jesse's

On the way home from Vegas we stopped at my brother, Jesse's house in Fort Worth, Texas. We got there New Year's Eve and celbrated the Argentine New Year's (where Jesse went on his mission) at 9:00 pm. We then stayed a couple days and had a blast with the largest gathering of children on our trip (and only two families this time).

We had an all children tea party

Played "storm the fort"

My niece, Julie did the camera work on this. Yes, Jesse and I have to get our kicks by beating our 5 & 6-year-olds at a Nerf gun war.

Enjoyed PERFECT weather, wore our t-shirts and played baseball at the park. We also shot off rockets at a nearby field. That's the kind of thing you do when you go to play with an engineer that builds rockets professionally.

So much fun! Oh, I wish these guys lived closer!

Tea Time with Nana

My sister, Brooke got a tea set when she was about Emma's age. Since her high school friends told her it was not cool to have tea parties anymore she gave the set to Emma when we visited. Everyone dressed in tea party attire and enjoyed the hot cocoa and cookies. I love that these adults love my child enough to humor her with this kind of stuff! That's what families for.

Vegas Vacation Part 1- Cross Country Trek.

Okay, I realize Christmas and this trip were like a month ago but this blog is also my journal so I'm justifying such late posts for posterity's sake or at least my own lousy memories' sake.
So here's some memories from our Vegas Vacation starting with our cross-country drive.
I've lived in Vegas most my life (besides a short stint in Chicago while I was very young). Vacations were to Utah, California, and Arizona. So I'm a very southwest kinda gal and our move to the south was a big deal in my little world. So driving across the south (Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas) was a cultural experience for me. We knew we were entering real southern country when we entered a convenience store and found these treasures proudly displayed for sale:
Day 1- The first day of our trek we drove 12 hours to Dallas and stayed at my brother, Jesse's house. We left our house about 4 am so we could get in a few hours of driving while the kids slept. about halfway to Dallas we found this park in Clinton, Mississippi (I got directions online before we left-google maps is our friend). It was a very unique park that provided good wiggle time for the kids and sanity for the parents. We stayed the night at Jesse's. We had to leave early the next morning but promised the kids we'd stay longer on the way home.
Day 2 (Dallas to Albuquerque)- drove through a bunch of dinky towns in Texas and every one had a big Dairy Queen. Apparently them Texans like their ice creams or sumpin'. Clarendon, TX had a "Nuttin Fancy Cafe" and a "It'll Do Motel" to remind us we were still in the south. I laughed when we went through Childress, Texas and pointed out to Jamie that the Detention Center was the nicest building in town. We stayed the night at a hotel Jamie got a great deal on Priceline for that turned out to be pretty nice. It had a heated indoor pool and jacuzzi so when the little boys crashed right away, Emma and I snuck down and took a dip. Emma was all excited to be "sneaking" out late, just her and mom.

Day 3 (Albuquerque to Vegas)- We woke up and got ready for church, ate the complimentary hotel breakfast, hopped in the car and drove four hours to make a 10:00 sacrament meeting in Flagstaff. After sacrament meeting we girls changed in the bathroom and the kids got to check out the snow. The boys were disappointed to find out how wet and cold it was and were done after a couple minutes. Emma, the only one who would leave her mittens on, made and threw some snowballs. The first one landed on her own shoe-hmm looks like she needs to practice more. Flagstaff was a nice change from the flatlands and dead grass we'd been driving through. It was fun to see snow-covered mountains especially since the weather was sunny and beautiful.
Still Day 3- Dam bypass project. For some time now they've been working on a bridge bypass to keep the traffic off the Hoover Dam. This causes delays in addition to the security check point line. I was surprised to see how high this bridge is. You have to consider that this is after the dam so the water level is a whole lot lower. Kinda scary! I've never been so excited to cross Hoover and enter Nevada, knowing how close we were to home and family! We felt safe and secure as we entered the valley and had the strong mountains surrounding us and giving us reference points. I love being able to look across the valley and seeing the city, just being able to see where you are and what's around you without the suffocating trees towering over you and surrounding you. I love the greeness and beauty of Georgia, but it's not what I know, not what I'm comfortable with. I know a lot of people hate the desert but I love knowing where I am and seeing where I'm headed. There's a much clearer vision here even in it's plainess and neutral colors.
"Home means Nevada. Home means the hills."

Emma's Dark Side

As I've mentioned before on this blog, Emma's a big Grandma Ginger fan. Ginger Yule is my mom's institute teacher and has put out stories on CD that she's told to her grandchildren. For Christmas my mom gave Emma Volumes 1-3 of Grandma Ginger's Bible Stories. Emma has listened to them every night since we got home and is fascinated with the stories. She quotes lines and tells me her own summary (which no one unfamiliar with the bible would have a clue what she was talking about). The one Emma has been most taken with is the story of Baby Moses. She tells me constantly that they killed the babies. A little boy I was babysitting today was going down our slide and she was pretending he was sliding into the river to be drowned. Then when we got in the house she grabbed our scarves and wanted to tie up the boys to pretend they were babies to be killed. I reminded her we don't tie people up-yes we've had to establish this rule before (Emma actually ties some really good knots). I'm glad she makes the scriptures real in her life but this a little troubling. She also was intrigued by the story of Samson and couldn't remember what made him strong but remembered that they poked his eyes out after they capture him. Do I need to find a G-rated version of the bible for my little girl? She's been watching a Nephi video too, so she told me today that I was being wicked (because I got on her for not listening or shall I say hearkening) and she was going to have to go somewhere else. She wasn't joking. The force is strong in this one, but sometimes I see flashes of Episode 3 coming out of this girl.

Dr. Emma on Vacation

So as most of you know, we drove to Las Vegas for Christmas. Thus the long blogging strike. It took us three days driving to get there so we saw a lot of new places. Here's some of the cute things that my kids said on this adventure:

Driving through Flagstaff
Me-"We're in Flagstaff now."
Emma
- "Flagstuff?....The earth has lots of pretty places with silly names!"

We spent the night at my brother's in Dallas. The next day we drove from Dallas to Albuquerque. After the long first leg we stopped in Amarillo.
Me- "Jamie"
Weston- "James?"

Emma-"Yeah, remember James in Texas. Well we're not in Texas anymore that was this morning. We left Texas and now we're going to a hotel."
Me-"Uh...actually Emma we're still in Texas."
Emma- "WHAT!!!" (thinking her parents must be lost)

I guess we've been in the flatlands of Georgia too long because when we drove through the mountains at Hoover Dam Weston looked out his window and pointed to a mountain and said, "look mom, a big bump!" and as we kept driving he'd coo, "cute, cute mountains."

I can't remember what brought this on but Emma told her uncles on the way home from church, "if you throw up in someone's hands, it drips." (she knows this because all three kids were sick the week before we left).

Emma told every family member that listened, "you have to drive three days to come see us."

Andrew- "Cars! Cars! Cars!"

We drove to my brother's in Dallas again for New Years Eve so I tried to explain New Years to Emma at a rest stop.
Me- "Well today's 2008 but tommorrow will be a new year. It will be 2009."
Emma- (pondering this) "What do we do in 2009? Will it be fun?" (I hope so Em)

Jamie got "Good and Plenty" in his stocking that he shared with the kids while they pulled out their new toys when we got home.
Emma- "That candy makes us think about God."
Jamie- "Why's it make you think about God."
Emma- "Because he's the Savior."
a minute later-"Give some to Weston because he needs to think about God. He just thinks about trains."

Foolish Traditions for our Father

Jamie has a unique and fun tradition. We do a rotation for sibling Christmas gifts but everyone else gets a cheap gift too. Jamie's sister does socks for everyone which is always a welcome and comfy commodity in our house. Jamie, however, took another route. Each year he finds treasures at the dollar store and writes poems to present for each family member. He has too much fun with it and gets us laughing. If only he could market his skill but I don't know of any career that has use for this interesting little talent of his. Here's the poems and gifts he gave this year:

Dad
A cap of glory and a snack to please,
We salute you – our Admiral and noble Head Cheese!
Cameron
Hide those unsightly discolorations,
then enjoy a namesake snacking sensation!
Shayla
This custom butter cream
will stop the scream
Should the other begin
to crawl on your skin!

Mom
This porcelain primate is unique in the earth
And crap-filled bears have limitless worth!
Jeff
(Note: Jamie and Jeff love watching low budget movies together for laughs)
Does it get any better, or worse than this vid?
Keep it forever – don’t ever be rid!
Stephanie
You’ve been a good girl, and deserve to have a ball
So go wild – consume some coffee and alcohol
Your bishop understands and’s given his consent
On your righteousness these sins will leave nary a dent!
(No photo- it was Coffee flavored Twix and champagne crackers)
Nate
Imagine your future – oiled buffness, oh my gosh!
You’ll forever get the girls who are spicy and posh!
Brent
Never before has orange been so cool
A Howdy Do Do-Rag? I pity da foo’!
