It's Beginning to Feel like Christmas

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care
and nativities up over here and up there
And Weston was dreamily looking at ads
hoping to score with his mom and his dad
But something was missing something we had every year
something that always brought holiday cheer
This year our family's so many miles away
and surely we wouldn't have them Christmas day.
But what to our wondering eyes should we see
But a wreath from Grandma bought from QVC
So we hung it on the door and beamed with great pride
Our house looks so festive and the pine is alive

And Nana sent a dress and each boy got a shirt
So we took some pictures and smiled til it hurt
And Mommy got music with holiday style
Happy to play though it's been quite awhile
Now that is how Christmas should sound and should smell
Thanks to our family, aren't they just swell?
We still will miss Grandma and Nana and Russ
But thank you for sending some Christmas to us!

Signs that Christmas is coming

Six Geese A-laying
I caught these guys exiting the scene of the crime. And all this time I thought my neighbor's lil' dog was leaving those surprises on my driveway.

The old fat guy and his fan mail are here
Emma has been bringing all sorts of cute Christmasy crafts and worksheets home from school. Here in the South we're a lot more open about religion and even though they still call it "winter break" there is no hiding of the word Christmas. But I have a confession: I have Santa issues. I know boycotting the guy would make me some evil, magic-killing, prude of a parent but I just don't like the concept. I mean I don't want to put up this big lie that distracts from the real focus. I don't like the idea of my kids focusing on things they want and forget about whose birthday we're celebrating and serving others. So I try to stress the religious part with my kids and just never confirm or deny the existence of Santa. Is this evil? Does anyone else feel this way? If Santa's a big deal at your house I won't think less of you. I do understand there is something magical in believing in him and the pure joy of kids finding their treasures Christmas morning. So go ahead, talk me in or out of this. Now after that rant, I have to admit this was cute:
Emma's Letter to Santa
She wants a bike and she's "going to trane it." And if that last caption has you thinking I'm pure evil, relax, she's getting her bike and we're not going to take credit for it (even though Jamie spent hours in the basement fixing it yesterday rolling his eyes while telling me, "you get what you pay for." Hey, it looked good and clean how was I to know the bearings were shot?). But we love that girl and she has been a good girl this year. "This has been my good year," she tells me, "I haven't even gone in time out for a long time."
Christmas Artwork
Emma is becoming quite the little arteest! I love her drawings! I'm not biased; I just have the most talented, clever, amazing, brilliant, and otherwise perfect children :o)
So who wouldn't spend hours fixing a bike for such a child and in exchange for such fine art?

A Smile Worth Sharing

I got this packet from Emma's school last week with punch out ornaments and magnets :
Really? Now I think Emma is a beautiful girl and I like her hair in this picture but this right here is not a "smile worth sharing." Well, actually it might be worth sharing for some laughs but not a smile worth buying.
It reminds of Emma's first (and only other) professional photo shoot. Is it just me or is there something awkward about a chubby baby helplessly lying there kicking on a pretty brass bed?
Poor girl got this awkward picture habit from my side. Steeds have perfect teeth and can take a pic. Us Cannons have issues with cameras. Good-looking group but get a camera and strange things start happening.
So anyway, when I saw the order form to get the sheets for $20 I scoffed (especially with the off-centered numbers and pics). But thanks for the samplers which Emma was already popping out and sticking on the fridge. I didn't want to waste them, so I stuck them in some family's cards (people who love her anyway and know that she has better moments). This was Monday. Thursday I get a note from the school asking the parents to either send the money for the pics or return the packet. Uh, shouldn't this have been mentioned when you sent home the packet? Do you know how many people are sending cards this week? After a couple of phone calls I reluctantly ripped open the grandparents envelopes still on my desk to get the magnets back and sent the packet with a letter explaining that this was not cool and that there were pictures that couldn't be retrieved (already sent). No one complained about the missing pics. So for those of you to be "blessed" with this smile on your tree or fridge, enjoy!

The Natural Man

Weston hit a child so he got put in time out. I came in when his time was up to talk and asked him why he was put in time out.
"Because I was being human."

Dr. Emma on Music Appreciation

Dr. Emma likes to make lists so she made a list of Christmas songs for us to sing. She went back down the list to check off anything we missed and asked on one of them,
"What's this one?"
Mom- "That's I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day" (she wanted some songs about bells)
Em- (all matter-of-fact) "Oh yeah. You did a good job on that one. I can tell you're almost a good singer."

Well thank you Simon.

Days of Thanksgiving Days #22-26

Sorry I totally dropped these thankful posts but I was too busy enjoying my blessings. Here's a quick wrap up to finish out the month (the month that's come and gone already):
I'm grateful for our home! I was trying not to do any of the things I did last year but since it's a different house I thought this one could slide. We have a great neighborhood. The trees are mature and beautiful and give shade and color. The homes are older with full front porches that have swings and rocking chairs, bright front doors and matching shutters. There's a little lake across the street with geese and shade trees line the streets. I love the feel of our quaint, peaceful little neighborhood! Our home has fit our needs and then some. The space is a little more than I need actually but it's nice. We have a large living room and bedroom and a convenient playroom that I love. In Vegas we were squishing everything into our three-bedroom condo, getting creative with storage space, and squeezing to fit two people in the kitchen. Here there is room to breathe or run around like a maniac, whatever your preference. Our yard has been such a great little place for the kids and a relaxing retreat for us. We're just really quite comfortable here and hope to stay for some time yet.

I'm grateful for this handsome man! He took last Wednesday off to help me clean and work on projects to get everything ready for our company and Thanksgiving guests and then he was patient with me through the weekend with all our silly insanity.
This picture reminds me of the seperate (but equal) roles mothers and fathers have. I can chase the kids around all day, work around the house, teach them, read to them, sing to them etc etc but this, this stuff right here, I can't do. Daddy's are official wrestle buddies and piggy-backers at our house. Jamie may be older than me in years but physically I'm an old foggie. I could tell it was going to be rainy this week. My knees told me so.

I'm grateful for brothers! So I did a sister shout out already so I thought it only fair that I recognized the males in my life. After all, I've grown up surrounded by boys. I have four brothers, Jamie comes from a family with four boys and I have two lil' boys and seven nephews (only one niece). But my brothers are worthy of some post space. My brothers are really brilliant and talented. It was both a blessing and a curse growing up. They set a high standard and teachers were generally pleased to have another Cannon in their class when I arrived. I'm not a Cannon boy though and not just because of the obvious gender difference. My brothers excel academically, they play musical instruments, they sing, they can fix anything (and improve it) they were involved in sports, they aced the SAT, they got into BYU and received scholarships and awards, they build amazing things, they're cultured, they can write, they are clever and funny, they speak 3 different languages, they are awesome photographers, they are well read, they serve faithfully in the church, they are great husbands and fathers, they became (or are becoming) a rocket scientist, a doctor, a dentist, an accountant and a professor. Yeah, hard act to follow right? But I am grateful for their example, their humor, their goodness, their talent, and their support. Because even though I feel like I missed most those genes, I'm humbled to be surrounded by such greatness.

I'm grateful for Nature's bounty! Okay I'm not that into carrots particularly but holy cow, look at those monsters! Andrew's smiling because we called them "big fat caterpillars" from his favorite book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. But I really love fruit. It was so nice of Heavenly Father to make something so good for us taste so yummy! True I love them even more in pies and ice cream and coated in caramel and sugar and such but nature has a pretty good thing going with that fruit business.

I'm grateful for a piano! I took piano lessons for years and really enjoy playing but have gotten a little rusty over the years because I didn't have a piano to practice regularly. It was one of those "one day" things on my wish list. But a friend of ours had a piano they wanted us to babysit. I don't have any piano babysitting experience but I try to give it attention and clean up after it. It's so great to have a piano in the house! The kids all like it too, but Weston has taken a special interest in it and will sit for long periods (for a three-year-old) playing at it and concentrating. I love his interest in music. I'm not sure how long this baby will stay but it sounds like we will have some good quality bonding time here. Now I just wish I had my old music so I can play some Christmas music! I'll have to look into buying some and hope my hands remember how to do this.

Days of Thanksgiving Days #27-30

I'm grateful for my brother who values family time and drove the 12 hours to our house from Dallas to be here for Thanksgiving! He's an amazing father and was just as good with my kids. Not hard to warm up to Uncle Jesse. Of course, he's always been that way. I'm grateful for his wife Deborah too for making the trek but she already had her post :o)

I'm grateful for cousins! My cousins are great too but I mean my kids' cousins. We had four last week and had more fun than should be allowed. Oh how we love these guys! At dinner one night David complained that Julie was trying to hog Emma. I joked that Emma should set up a schedule for equal allotments of time. Julie started breaking up the minutes but Emma wisely noted, "We can all just play together." And they did.

Tonight Emma asked me "do you remember Seth and Brighton?" (the Vegas cousins)
"Yes"
"Do you remember that Seth is my favorite baby in the whole world?"
Hopefully Seth will still have enough baby left in him when we see him again.

I'm grateful for friends who love us no matter how strange we might be.
Andrew loves Corey too and even though he calls every man "daddy" he calls Corey, "Crazy." Maybe because he chooses to hang out with us.

I'm grateful for grateful kids. Every night I'd ask the kids what they were grateful for and they always came up with good answers quickly. I was impressed they didn't have to think about it or be given suggestions. Even Andrew had something to say most nights.

Days of Thanksgiving Day #21

I'm grateful Andrew's life has been spared.

After finding Jamie's work laptop this morning I wasn't so sure.

Days of Thanksgiving Day # 20

I am grateful Andrew's eager to learn
Two has it's moments but the fun part is that Andrew is really eager to learn. He wants to count and sing everything. He loves to show off his little tidbits of knowledge and say clever things that will get praise. Andrew even likes helping. He knows mommy will be so pleased if he cleans up his toys. Sometimes he likes to put the silverware away (after mom takes care of the knives), I was impressed when he put everything in the right place and as you can see, he thought he was pretty amazing too.
Andrew wants to keep up with the older kids imitating everything they do (for better or worse). It's fun to watch him and Emma dance around the living room singing songs together or see the towers he builds with Weston.
I guess he knows he has some big shoes to fill.
Jamie is grateful for piano
Emma is grateful for a good Thanksgiving
Weston is grateful for Sunday
Andrew is grateful for feet, nose, eyes, arms, head, daddy, lions, and Jesus
(he went on for 10 minutes about what he's grateful for. These are just the ones I could remember. Such a thankful little boy)

Days of Thanksgiving Day #19

I am grateful for Emma's goodness
Emma is very much driven by what is right and what is good. She always wants to know what the rules are and makes sure that everyone lives by them. Emma thrives off of schedules and routines and rules because she needs to know what is expected and when she can expect things. She listens intently to scripture stories to be sure she gets the message. It's a little akward at times when she lectures Weston about following "satan's church" when he won't clean up his toys but I'm glad she's internalizing what she's being taught. This is actually one of the reasons Jamie and I are supporters of public school, because we want to share our little lights and let these kids have a chance to practice what they're being taught at home (and hope that it comes out right). And Emma is definitely a bright light. She's smart and to-the-book, but humble and sweet. Our family is certainly happier and better with her in it! She helps keep me in line.
Jamie is grateful for synthesizers

Weston is grateful for kitties
Andrew was not grateful for mom's soup

Days of Gratitude Day #18

I am grateful for Weston's big eyes
I was looking for a picture for a different subject when I ran across this and in my head I could hear my dad singing "jeepers, creepers, where'd ya get those peepers...". I love Weston's big, brown puppy dog eyes! (although in this pic. they're still blue) They're so fitting for the sweet little guy that he is. Women would kill for those lashes. And if these peepers don't melt ya, wait 'til you see him smile (which for some reason is hard to catch on camera- somber thing) or say something in his cute voice. That's why he was given such kissable cheekys.
Jamie is grateful for mom's jeans
Emma is grateful for healthy living
Weston is grateful for beauties
and Jamie can't remember what Andrew said ( I was at a RS activity)

Days of Thanksgiving Day #16

You may have noticed that the day # in my titles have not matched the date, meaning I am behind. Sorry. I've been a day behind for awhile. Then yesterday our computer was doing this funny thing where it types all the words backwards (does this occasionally) and I'm just not talented enough to type an entire post backwards (maybe I should have enlisted my BIL's spelling talents). Anyway, I'll try to catch up.

Today I am grateful for great deals!
I've posted before about my new couponing hobby. I love it! My pantry, fridge, freezer and basement are full of food and I've spent a lot less money bulking up than I did on a weekly list. I use to buy generic items for what I thought was cheap but now I get the name brands for much less and even free. So here's the "little people" I have to thank:
(Originally:$186.88 including 16 boxes of cereal and 11-4 packs of yogurt, my total: $25.62)
Thank you Publix (the southern Albertsons) for taking all my coupons and letting me combine them and for having great BOGO sales.

Thank you southernsavers.com for telling me what's on sale, what the coupon matches are, where to get the coupons, and making my shopping list for me! Love that site!!!
(All the free stuff from Rite Aid in the last week. Sorry the mirror is deceiving- there are 16 Herbal Essence bottles and 3 sodas)
Thank you Rite Aid for having lots of online rebates that let me get so much for free and giving me extra in-store coupons!
Thank you Douglas County Library for giving me free local papers so I can get lots of coupons to buy in bulk!
Thank you Kroger (southern Smiths) for having Megas Sales and giving my kids stickers and candy!
Thank you mooebn.com for telling me all the other (non-food) deals to grab! Maybe my closet will end up as full and frugal as my pantry.

Jamie is grateful for reclining seats (on the bus).
Emma is grateful for Vitamin C
Weston is grateful for groups (sure son)
Andrew is grateful for Jesus.

Days of Gratitude Day #15

Today I am grateful for my free turkey!
I was about to go online to find a picture of a turkey but then I remembered I said I don't do that and I thought, "hey, I've got pictures of turkeys." So here's a couple of my little turkeys (and it also goes with Weston and Andrew's gratefuls today).
Remember how I wrote about my food blogs a couple days ago? Well, one of them sent me an e-mail today saying I won one of her free turkeys. I just left a comment. The comment was supposed to be about a favorite Thanksgiving recipe or tradition. So I just wrote about the delicious rolls my mom makes every year that I would be missing (because I have doubts that I can create such yumminess myself). And I won! Okay, so my comment wasn't an amazing award-winning piece of work but I won a turkey! Jamie's not sharing my enthusiasm but I never win anything and this really simplifies my Thanksgiving budget and planning. Hoorah!
Jamie is grateful for second and third notices (don't even ask, long story)
Emma is grateful for Alyssa (her BFF)
Weston is grateful for Andrew
Andrew is grateful for Weston
It was so cute. Weston looked at Andrew and said he was grateful for him and grinned and blushed. Then Andrew piped in excitedly "I'm gatefo for Weston!" And I "aw"ed and kissed the cuties. Then Emma wimpered, "no one said they were grateful for me."

Days of Thanksgiving Day #14

I am grateful for cute little voices!

Andrew loves the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Emma has some great things come out her mouth but I love listening to my little boys' voices. And here's another video with Weston's cute voice at the end (and in the background) and for anyone that hasn't spent time with Dr. Emma you can hear what she sounds like and how she thinks. She has a unique voice and an imagination.

Days of Thanksgiving Day #13

I am grateful for sisters!
I have four brothers and for a long time I was the only girl. Oh, how I longed for a sister! When I learned how to pray, I asked the Lord to give me a sister. The odds weren't really in my favor and with five kids and six years without babies in the Cannon house it appeared as though I would have to hold my own as the girl of the house. But I got her!
I was nine when Brooke was born. My mom does c-sections so I knew the day and time my sister was going to arrive. I was in school at PE and had been watching my watch all day and had a little celebration when the designated time arrived. I finally had my sister! I was excited to share a room finally (weird huh) and mothered that little girl constantly. I remember when Brooke was a toddler my mom telling me to stop hugging her so much. I just really adored her (and still do, but have learned to control myself ; ) I love my brothers but they just can't offer what a sister offers. I love my Brooke!

I was glad to have a sister but missed having an older sister. Someone to look up to and steal clothes from and do hair and other girly stuff with. But I realized that my brothers would get married and then I would get some sisters close to my age (it just keeps getting better, my plan). And I was right. Just after I had graduated high school I got my first sister-in-law, Deborah. I remember my brother asking my sister and I what we thought of Deborah and we both agreed that she was nice, smart, and pretty. And so, he married her (because he would only do so with my approval haha). Now Deborah will tell you that she's not a girly girl and she's never lived close enough for me to raid her closet but she has been someone to look up to (I'll resist the urge to make a joke about her height...oh wait..oops). She's fun to be with and a good role model for me. I love my Deborah!

A couple years later I got married and got two more sister-in-laws (score). This is the lovely Shayla. She is even closer to my age and fun to be around. She's clever and funny and very thoughtful. She's dedicated to family and keeps up with our little gang. She even went as far as to fly her family out here to visit. With two toddlers, that's dedication. She's a keeper! I love my Shayla!

This is Jamie's other sister Chelsea. She's Brooke's age. She's okay I guess. haha just kidding. Chelsea's a cutie and full of energy. She was eleven when Jamie and I got married but she and Brooke started college this year. It's fun to have watched her blossom into a beautiful and talented lady! I love my Chelsea!

When Emma was a baby my brother married this beautiful lady! Isn't her hair amazing? Lindy is the sweetest most patient person I know. I have never heard an unkind word from her and she is very sensitive to the needs of others. I admire her a great deal and wish I were as patient with my children as she is with hers. I love my Lindy!

And then Jamie's brother got married and I got another sister-in-law for my collection. This is the gorgeous Stephanie. She is very smart and talented in the kitchen. She not only has natural good looks but always has the cutest clothes and hair. I think I need to fly her out to fix me up and maybe make me some yummy stuff to eat. And apparently Stephanie's a non-conformist. Try as I may, I could not get her picture to center. But we'll let her be over there if it's that important to her. I love my Stephanie!

Here's the newest edition to my sister gallery. This is pretty princess Angie (as Weston refers to her but I have to agree). She married my brother Nate this summer and we are thrilled to have her in the family. I haven't had much of a chance to get to know her yet but I do know this much at least: she's smart because she married Nate, she's patient and clever because she waited for Nate to see how awesome she is, and she's brave because she gave up her life in SLC to follow my brother across the country to Boston (driving no less) so he could go to school again-so she has a new home, new name, new roommate, new ward, and is far from her family and friends. That's a dedicated woman. I love my Angie!
Jamie is grateful for sleep (I'm guessing because he's sleeping and can't give his answer)
Emma is grateful for lizards
Weston is grateful for the planets
Andrew is grateful for Jesus
